The Smart’s collection is rich in works about Chicago and by Chicago-based artists and architects. Works of Chicago recall major moments in the city’s history, like the 1893 World’s Fair, held just blocks away from the Smart Museum, and changes to the identities of its neighborhoods. Works by Chicago artists such as Miyoko Ito, Barbara Crane, and Gerald Williams feed into a history woven from diverse voices and stemming from schools like the New Bauhaus and artistic communities such as those from Chicago’s South Side.
