The scholars Richard and Caroline Brettell have written that Pissarro’s peasants work "easily, in collective groupings in which their efforts are minimized and the strain of their labour rarely, if ever, felt." In this Pissarro differs substantially from Millet, whose rural laborers are ravaged by work and subjugated by the seasons. Pissarro’s images move away from descriptive realism and toward artificial groupings of figures with frozen gestures.
