Durer House, Nuremburg

The fifteenth-century Nuremberg house in which Dürer lived from 1509 until his death in 1528 is the centerpiece of Stanley Anderson’s etching. The four-story house, with its distinctive medieval half-timbering, was damaged but not destroyed by a bomb in World War II; it has since been restored. Dürer might be called the ultimate ancestral inspiration for the linear printmaking technique in which Anderson excelled. Still, the print is more in the spirit of a travelogue than a reverent homage.
