Reflecting Waterloo’s particular fondness for woodland and forested landscapres, Landscape with Apollo and Daphne, Waterloo uses a pair of lovers from classical mythology to impart a Roman cast to the landscape. Daphne was a nymph who, fleeing the god Apollo in hot pursuit, was transformed into a laurel tree in order to protect her chastity.
