This medal, honoring a prominent leader in the anti-Napoleonic campaigns, is distinctly Prussian (as opposed to German) in its patriotic claims. It displays the coat of arms of the Prussian capital, Berlin; commemorates the dates of three Prussian victories on its reverse (see photo); and is not of bronze but of iron, a material firmly associated, again, with Berlin. The medal's explicitly and exclusively Prussian associations contrast with the attitude of those who, after the defeat of Napoleon, called for unity among all German speaking peoples.
