Mars as a Sign of the Zodiac

The Renaissance period inherited medieval beliefs that the earthly world is governed by the stars and the seven planets, each associated with a godly entity. Linked to the different planets were different influences, both good and bad, which could affect one’s personality and character. For example, those born under the sign of Mars, the god of war, demonstrated a bellicose nature and were thus suited to becoming warriors. Such astrological gods were popularly represented in pictorial cycles of the zodiac that featured them riding through the skies in chariots pulled by flying creatures. Punched with a hole in the top, this plaquette was meant to be hung on the wall, its small size offering an intimate view into the cosmic nature of the scene.
