An embodiment of sensuality, this sculpted faun wears a crown of grapes and grape leaves in his hair, holds a Pan pipe, and ogles his object of desire with an intent gaze. Seated Faun was not Jean Baptiste Clésinger’s first foray into suggestive subject matter. Previous work had been called "more than indecent." Yet there was great public demand for his sculptures, and small-scale bronze reproductions ensured that a wider audience of collectors could acquire them.
