A painter, printmaker, and engraver, Beaufrère earned a scholarship in 1911 that allowed him to travel widely through Algeria, Italy, and Spain. His travels and his work were interrupted during the First World War, in which he served as an infantryman. This print demonstrates the astonishing resilience of nostalgic pastoral imagery, even after the transformative impact of the Industrial Revolution and the ravages of the First World War.
