This vessel merges two shapes: a bulbous jar and a squat rounded bowl used to form the neck of this piece. The cross-hatched net motif which dominates the center of the jar is a hallmark of later Majiayao vessels. Majiayao vessels were designed and decorated with practicality in mind. Only painted down to the mid-section, jars were typically placed in small holes specifically dug to secure the vessel snugly. The ear handles located at the vessel’s bulging waist were usually attached with slings for easy handling.
