He once wrote, "For each work of art that becomes physical, there are many variations that do not." The essence of LeWitt’s work is clearest in the print showing a small version of the 16 permutations that make up the complete series (bottom right) with the "rules" for the project. What we can see here is only a minute sample of the possibilities framed by LeWitt’s initial idea. Though his instructions seem specific, the phrase "drawn at random" allows for infinite permutations.
