Boris Fedorovich (Fydorovich) RybchenkovRussian, 1899-1994

Painter and graphic artist Boris Fedorovich Rybchenkov was born in Smolensk, Russia. After art school in Kiev, he was drafted into the Red Army as a soldier-artist during the civil war (1917–1923) and participated in propaganda activities organized by the Russian government. Rybchenkov painted thickly textured oil impressions of urban and rural landscapes in the 1920s and 1930s. Around 1935, the political climate changed and the state stopped purchasing his work until after World War II, when modern-style paintings became politically acceptable again. In 1981, he lost all but his peripheral vision, but continued to paint in watercolor until his death in Moscow in 1994.
