Artist Info
Marianne BrandtGerman, 1893-1983

Marianne Brandt is one of the best-known metalworkers and one of the few women connected with the craft tradition of the modern German art and design school, the Bauhaus. She began her artistic career as a painter but joined the famous school in 1924 as a student in the Metal Workshop, on the advice of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), artistic director of the department from 1923 to 1928. Brandt succeeded Moholy-Nagy as acting director of the workshop from 1928 to 1929. Her functional, household objects are recognized as some of the finest of Bauhaus design.
