Not on viewThis print represents the central role of visualization in Christian mystical experience. This composition alludes to the miraculous lactation of St. Bernard, in which the saint received divine knowledge in the form of milk streaming from a heavenly apparition of the Virgin. The stance of the Christ Child indicates his participation in this sharing of divine nourishment. This miracle also signals the multisensorial nature of Christian spirituality: divine knowledge is attainable not only through the eyes, but through a range of tactile experiences.
