Not on viewMade for John Constable’s publication English Landscape Scenery, and closely supervised by him, this print shows laborers digging in the sandpits of Hampstead Heath outside London. Like the French images in this exhibition, it highlights "ordinary" kinds of rural occupation. Yet its natural, uncultivated landscape, accentuated by Constable’s wild clouds announcing an approaching storm, reflects a distinctively English sensibility.
