Not on viewLouis Comfort Tiffany, an important designer of American Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil) glassware, was first inspired by the iridescence of ancient Roman glass and the fantastical work of the French designer Émile Gallé (1846–1904). This candlestick and the exhibited vases are examples of Tiffany’s Favrile glass—its opalescent effects produced with metallic luster. The overall organic forms, sinuous lines, foliate decorations, and anthropomorphic podlike feet of the candlestick, in particular, all relate to Art Nouveau’s interest in form and decoration abstracted from nature.
