Description

Chicago-area artist Suzanne Doremus maintains that she is most satisfied "when a painting has a scattered feeling, with the elements just barely held together, as if I threw something on the canvas and it fell in the right place." Though she carefully structures her work, Doremus achieves a haphazard sensibility in paintings such as this one by working on several at once, often combining and recombining the same images, gestures, and media in more than one painting. Through Doremus’ ever-expanding vocabulary of visual and material elements, her body of work generates its own internal dialogue, with each painting an abstract "portrait" of its creator.
