Not on viewThis exquisite and mysterious drawing shows a farm woman and her son coming home from the fields at evening, bearing sheaves of wheat. Monumental figures, they tower over a flat landscape illuminated only by a sliver of moon. As the mother holds her dutiful son’s hand, her other arm makes a graceful arabesque above her head. Scenes such as this reinforced the values of hard work and family that were often idealized as fundamental to rural life.
