Description

Robert Laurent was one of the first sculptors in the United States to use direct carving. Many sculptors who engaged in direct carving did so because they wanted to bring out the particular properties of a piece of stone or wood, highlighting the natural colors and surfaces. How might this sculpture have looked different if Laurent began with a drawing without responding directly to the qualities of the piece of limestone he was working with?
