Not on viewLepère is best known as a wood-engraver, a calling which gave him the financial security of a commercial illustrator coupled with artistic recognition for his original, single-sheet designs. Although he favored Parisian subject matter, in this etching he has composed a timeless scene of leisure which could as easily represent mythological figures as nineteenth-century bathers.
