Not on viewThe continuing popularity of Dürer’s works after his death in 1528 generated a thirst for copies that was satisfied by German followers like Lambert Hopfer. His Entombment of Christ is directly based on a print from Dürer’s Engraved Passion series of 1507–1512. Unlike other copies, however, it could never be mistaken for the original—nor was it meant to be. Hopfer’s print proposes a much flatter space, and his overly regular use of line makes some of the figures almost cartoonish. HisLH monogram, which imitates Dürer’s AD, makes no false claims. Despite not being very exact, Hopfer’s prints did provide functional copies of Dürer’s well-known images.
