Pope.LAmerican, born 1955

Pope.L is a multidisciplinary artist known for provocative performances that challenge a variety of social issues, including those of race, gender, and sex. This drawing is from the extensive Failure Drawings series, in which the artist works only while traveling and uses only the tools available to him at that moment, anything from airplane motion-sickness bags to hotel stationary. The series allows Pope.L to explore the themes of mortality and success; he finds a contradiction between the passing of time and the need to travel for his art, which increased as he gained international acclaim. Failure Drawing #985 is particularly appropriate for the Art to Live With Collection, as the yellow ruled paper may be understood as an allusion to school supplies and hours spent in class taking notes.
