Kevin PangAmerican, born 1978

Kevin Pang is an MFA student at the University of Chicago and the winner of the inaugural Art to Live With MFA Acquisition Award. Pang created Fire and Erosion I and II specifically for UChicago students. His work explores the themes of pathways, unity, and fire. In preparing to create these pieces, Pang meditated deeply on collegiate life at UChicago and considered how a student would interact with these works while living in the dorms. The elliptical imagery represents community and unity, a visual articulation of the different social and academic circles students navigate while on campus. Finally, fire represents a duality, offering both warmth and protection, but also the possibility of destruction. A year at UChicago is not without stress, and Pang strove to create images that understand and lessen such anxieties through the calming articulation of form through ink on paper.
