Almost Vase and Flower embodies Hans Arp’s belief that there is little separation between art and the chance of the natural world, stating that his works “take shape on their own. I see merely to set my hands in motion.” Here, the dark forms distinctly stand apart from their yellow background, thereby drawing the viewer’s attention to the fluidity of their organic lines. These shapes are at once familiar and foreign, and, as the title of the work suggests, embody space between the realms of human creation and nature.
