Italian (Florentine), active ca. 1480-1510
SchoolFlorentine
BiographyThis unidentified artist is known as the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend because of the subject of two Smart Museum paintings. Little is known about him except that he was active in Florence at the end of the fifteenth century and was influenced by well-known Italian masters Sandro Botticelli (c. 1445–1510), Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494), and Filippo Lippi (c. 1457–1504). Other similar cassone, or hope chest, paintings are also attributed to him and with continued research, perhaps the artist's true name will be identified.
