Man Ray

American, 1890–1976
BiographyMan Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was a multidisciplinary American artist. Among other mediums, he worked in painting, sculpture, drawing, film, and photography. He even reinvented the photogram technique of placing objects directly on light-sensitized paper and exposing them to light, the products of which he called “rayograms.” Featured here is an untitled print from his series Electro-magie. The composition, which is dominated by a central white amorphous figure, conveys Man Ray’s interest in Surrealism and the absurd.
