Max KahnAmerican, 1902 - 2005

Max Kahn was one of many prominent 20th century artists to study and teach at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Having previously studied painting in France, Kahn devoted his time at the SAIC to printmaking. Though he experimented with black and white printmaking, his passion for color lithography is evident—combining bright, electric colors with softer washes of ink to create dynamism in his works. The prints featured here span a nineteen-year period of his long career. From the earliest work in 1939 through the late 1950’s, these prints display Kahn’s commitment to exploring the varying effects of color in lithography.
