Artist Info
Vera BerdichAmerican, 1915 - 2003

Vera Berdich, a native Chicagoan, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1946, founded the school’s printmaking department in 1947, and taught there for thirty-two years. In her time at the SAIC, she inspired generations of young artists and pioneered groundbreaking printmaking techniques that explored the tonal capabilities of the medium. In these works, Berdich’s expertise is made evident by her ability to create subtle shifts in ink color that render dream-like atmospheres. Berdich saw printmaking as a high art form rather than a means of reproduction and applied ink by hand so that each image is truly unique.
