Leonard Baskin

Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an American artist who worked as a sculptor, painter, illustrator, and printmaker throughout his career. He studied at Yale University and later taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College between 1953 and 1974. In addition to working as an illustrator and artist, he was a writer and ran the Gehenna Press for fine books. He was part of an elite literary society, and was close friends with Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, who dedicated a poem entitled 'Sculptor' to Baskin. His works feature in collections all around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Vatican Museum. He was also awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, among others.
