Takashi Murakami

Japanese, born 1962
BiographyTakashi Murakami, well-known for his collaborations with pop icon Kanye West and the fashion house Louis Vuitton and for his brightly colored anime characters, has successfully blurred the lines between high culture and low culture, the East and the West, and ancient and modern. He
coined the term “Superflat” to describe works that blend the flatness of commercial graphic design with the rising interest of anime and mange in post-World War II Japan. This print features Murakami’s signature smiling daisy in the Superflat style, which he created to symbolize the vapidity of consumer culture through visual shallowness. Murakami uses this 2D symbol of shallowness to trick the viewer into perceiving depth by making the canvas to appear spherical.
