Karel Appel

Dutch, 1921–2006
BiographyAfter the atrocities of World War II, Dutch avant-garde painter, sculptor, and poet Karel Appel became intrigued with children’s art, where rationalism is rejected in favor of instinctual and passionate geometric forms. This can be seen in Faces, where he colors outside of bold, jagged lines to create a sense of spontaneous freedom indicative of a post-war departure from realism.
