Zao Wou-ki

Zao Wou-Ki was born in China and formally trained at the Hangzhou School of Fine Arts. In 1947, he moved to Paris to explore a long-held fascination with modernism. His works harmonize traditional Chinese calligraphic techniques with a rising interest in abstraction. The works seen here showcase Wou-Ki’s ability to seamlessly integrates different styles; one utilizes calligraphy to focus on the structural quality of the line, while the other uses linearity to create relationships between colors.
