Pierre Alechinsky
Belgian, born 1927
BiographyPierre Alechinsky, a Belgian artist and member of the avant-garde CoBrA group, makes both colorful, expressive paintings and black-and-white drawings; across canvas and paper, he has depicted volcanoes, waterfalls, and fantastic creatures. He is recognized for his unique style that blends medieval illustrations, folk art, and comic-book layouts. “When I paint, I liberate monsters,” Alechinksy once explained. “They are the manifestations of all the doubts, searches, and groping for meaning and expression which all artists experience. One does not choose the content, one submits to it.”
