Jacques Villon
French, 1875–1963
BiographyJacques Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was a 20th century Cubist printmaker and painter known for deconstructing figures into their basic graphic components. In the works featured here Villon’s focus is not on figural representation. His central motifs are made from simple shapes and contrasting colors; though perhaps inspired by a figure or object, we see only the geometric elements that Villon wanted to reveal.
