Alfred Leslie
American, born 1927
BiographyAlfred Leslie is an American artist known for his large-scale paintings and avant-garde films. His instinctive, raw, and bold style earned him recognition as a second-generation Abstract Expressionist. “I used to think that if people said, ‘God that’s the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,’ I was doing something good,” said Leslie. His figural canvases, begun in the early 1960s, were no less shocking to audiences than Abstract Expressionism had been a generation before, thanks to their direct and unyielding mien.
