Caroline Liu
American, born 1987
BiographyCaroline Liu is originally from Naperville, and earned her BDA in Painting and Drawing from the University of New Mexico. There, seven years ago, a wooden door fell several feet onto her head, causing a brain injury that left her with six months of blurry vision, frequent migraines, and impaired hearing that lingers to this day; the accident also impacted her ability to form short-term memories. She moved back to Chicago in 2013, where she was still creating art as she adjusted to her new normal with the realization that the art she created served as a timeline. Liu’s artworks visually navigate the inner workings of her concussed mind, functioning as a therapeutic practice for holding onto memories she’d otherwise forget, as well as a vehicle for self-exploration and documentation of her everyday struggles as someone with memory loss. This vibrant work defies the serious memories they hold, popping with saturated pinks and oranges.
