American, born 1969
BiographyAcrobat (2023), is a limited-edition print by Sarah Sze, consisting of inkjet, silkscreen, collage, and gold leaf mounted on embossed Rives BFK. The title alludes to Indian writer Nabaneeta Dev Sen’s poem “Acrobat”, which illuminates a woman’s journey of self-discovery and self-expression. Sze’s print explores the themes from this poem and recontextualizes it with elements drawn from both the physical and digital worlds. With her experience working extensively with installations and sculptures, Sze sought to convey feelings of gravity, and give this print a sculptural quality. The perceived three dimensionality is heightened by the materiality of the print’s surface which includes intricate layering and collaging of different media. The collaging of visual elements provides viewers the feeling of constructing and deconstructing, encouraging the viewer to reconstruct the temporal and spatial elements of this image through the very act of viewing the piece.
