Robert Indiana
American, 1928–2018
BiographyRobert Indiana was one of many artists to design accompanying artwork for Chinese poet Walasse Ting’s 1964 poetry compilation 1 Cent Life. While some of the graphics appeared opposite the poems, many images, such as Indiana’s 1-2-3-4, occupied the same space as the text itself. The connection between text and image is not always immediately clear, but prompts the viewer to consider the possible relationships between Ting’s words and the images of the many artists that Ting recruited to contribute to the portfolio. 1 Cent Life was published in two editions, in 1963 and 1964. The Art to Live With prints are from the 1964 edition. Both versions of the full portfolio are available for viewing at Regenstein Library Special Collections.
