Assaf Evron

Israeli, born 1977
BiographyAssaf Evron earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his MA and BA from Tel Aviv University. A former photojournalist, Evron applies a “photographic logic” – his term for the camera’s ability to simultaneously document the resolutely volumetric world in all its plenitude and flatten it into an image – to architectural and natural features. This lithograph depicts the stage of Jessner’s 1920 production of Richard III, its starkness precluding the production of illusions. This interest in the relationship between space and cultural experience continues in Evron’s recent solo exhibition at the MCA, where he explored the relationship between the meandering curves of Israeli limestone and Chicago riverside architecture alike, inviting viewers to consider the historical significance of decorative surfaces.
